About The Cloth Nappy Blog
Hi!
I’ve cloth nappied two little ones and spent two years with my own MCN store. Over that time I collected and wrote a lot of information about nappying and when the time came to shut down the store there were frantic cries. Not about missing out on my nappies, although there were a couple of those (thanks, guys
), but “You will keep those articles up, won’t you?!”
Seeing I now run a couple of other blogs, the Cloth Nappy Blog was an obvious way to keep that information out there.
This is purely about general information, I don’t do specific recommendations of nappy brands for three reasons.
- Firstly, I haven’t tried them all! Many of the brands that were around 4 years ago when I was building up my stash no longer exist as the WAHMs who made them move on. And there are always new brands starting up, just because a brand is new or low-volume doesn’t mean they aren’t perfect for you.
- Secondly, relationships and word of mouth are enormous in this type of cottage industry. While this is fantastic if it is all based on merit, a lot of the time it isn’t. I don’t mean that the nappies with good buzz don’t deserve it, I’m sure they do, I just mean that equally good ones may miss out simply because the maker isn’t friends with talkative people, or has a smaller budget, or lives in the wrong place, or has better sewing than business skills. Since I have a sneaking sympathy for the under-dog I’d rather give them more of an opportunity, but the only way I can do that is avoid word of mouth.
- Finally, I don’t think it is possible to recommend nappies to someone else without a huge amount of knowledge. The nappies that work for you will depend on your baby’s shape, your washing routine, your climate, who changes, how often you change, and all sorts of other things. It also depends on your priorities – are you after quality? Fanciness? Embroidery? Cheap and cheerful? Trimness? The only way for you to really know what will work for you is to try out lots of different nappies until you get a system you are happy with.
